iRise Survey Reveals Over 60% of Software Application Projects Experience Delays, Cost Overruns or Missing Features

Survey of IT professionals also reveals broad communication issue with business over requirements

El Segundo, Calif. – June 24, 2008 – iRise®, the world's leading visualization solutions company, today announced the results of its national application definition survey. Commissioned by iRise and conducted by Zoomerang (a division of market research company MarketTools), the May survey of IT professionals revealed that over 60% of companies experienced delays, cost overruns or missing features in an application development project in the last two years. Not surprisingly, results show that poor communication between the business and IT was a key factor in these problems.

With the goal of exposing the principal frustrations around software definition currently affecting both emerging and large companies, the survey named two performance indicators most consistently cited as requirements for application success: 'time to market' and 'competitive capabilities in the market.' The survey points out key factors that prevent the delivery of expected performance. According to the survey, 'business stakeholders are not fully invested in the definition process' or 'have unrealistic expectations of the end result.' Also, companies have no efficient process in place for defining business applications.

Additional survey findings include:

  • 72% of respondents suffer from increased development costs in software projects due to rework and scope creep;
  • IT professionals that are prototyping applications are using MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Visio to document requirements, and over 60% of these respondents are not fully satisfied with their current method of defining applications;
  • 30% of participants said that they were not testing applications before development at all; and,
  • Almost 80% of respondents are interested in eliciting customer feedback using a fully functional prototype before coding.

For those companies struggling with application definition, the study results provide a clear indication that, with the correct tools, companies can significantly improve their application definition process.

"This survey highlights the problems plaguing business critical software projects that prevent companies from meeting business objectives," said Mitch Bishop, chief marketing officer of iRise. "As our customers will attest, visualizing business applications before they're built has proven to dramatically improve project outcomes, including overall application quality, accelerating time to market and reducing cost. Our vision is that all companies will soon visualize before they build as a standard practice."

With thousands of projects completed successfully, the value of visualization has proven to be enormous for businesses in highly competitive markets:

  • Get to market twice as fast;
  • Eliminate 30% of project costs;
  • Ensure success of global sourcing strategies; and,
  • Improve customer experience.
